Step-by-step: How to make a DIY cat costume for Halloween

What you'll need

  • Headband (ideally in a colour that matches your felt cat ears, or your hair)
  • Felt sheet in your cat fur colour of choice (we went with black)
  • Pink or white felt sheet (we used pink)
  • 1-2 hot glue sticks
  • Hot glue gun
  • A flat elastic that's long enough to loosely fit your neck and also knot in the back
  • Black eyeliner (liquid, gel or pencil)
  • An outfit that matches your chosen cat fur colour

Instructions

  1. Line up the white/pink and black (or other cat fur colour) felt sheets, one on top of the other. Fold them in half and cut through the layers so you end up with 4 triangles (2 white/pink, 2 black), all in the same size. These will be your 2 cat ears.
  2. For each cat ear, hot glue the pink triangle slightly below the black triangle, so it looks like the inside of a cat’s ear.
  3. Cut off the excess pink felt.
  4. Apply a line of glue on the front centre of each "ear", about halfway up the pink triangle, and squeeze and hold till cooled. Repeat on the other ear.
  5. Glue the bottom of the ears onto the headband.
  6. Flip the headband over and glue the back side of each ear to the headband. This helps the ears stand up.
  7. For the bow tie, cut 2 rectangles out of the remaining black felt. The larger piece should be about 5”x 2” and the smaller piece should be about 1” x 2.5”.
  8. Pinch the centre of the large piece, wrap the small piece around the pinched section and glue it closed. Take the glued side and attach the finished bowtie to the centre of the elastic with glue.
  9. Time for the finishing touches! Put on an outfit that matches your cat ears; use black eyeliner to draw on a nose, whiskers, and cat eye wings; fasten on your bowtie by knotting the elastic behind your neck; and put on your cat ears. You're meow officially ready for Halloween!
